The Economic and Social Research Foundation in conjunction with the World Bank organized the first of the Tanzania Growth Seminar Series, which focused on the topic: “Path to a Middle-Income Country: Benchmarking Tanzania.†The seminar took place on Wednesday, March 20, 2019 at the ESRF Conference Hall.
The seminar featured a presentation by the World Bank Tanzania economics team which highlighted key findings on how countries such as Bangladesh and Vietnam, which recently achieved middle-income country status, realized fast growth in per capita income in the past 10 years through structural transformation with manufacturing exports while also increasing agricultural productivity, managing population growth and fostering productivity. The presentation further touched on the role of private sector and human capital to enhance productivity.
As a public event, the seminar attended by members from the public sector, the private sector, civil society, academia, and development partners. A group of prominent leaders from these groups took part in the Panel Discussion to discuss priority areas for Tanzania to sustain growth toward achieving middle-income country status in the future.
