The Economic and Social Research Foundation (ESRF) in collaboration with China Agricultural University is organizing a “High Level Thinkers’ Dialogue on Development Cooperation between Tanzania and China: Focusing on Investments and Trade”. The conference is scheduled to take place on Monday 17th July 2017 at Hyatt Regency – Kilimanjaro Hotel in Dar es Salaam starting from 08.30a.m to 04:30pm.

The rise of China is certainly one of the most significant geopolitical changes since the 21st century. This rise has not only changed China itself, but mostly important changed the relationship between North and South, and even among the Southern community. Along with this change, China seemingly has been regarded as the ‘alternative model’ for many developing countries. With this regard, development experience exchanges and learning between China and other developing countries has been promoted by many international development agencies and Chinese Government over last decades.

Tanzania in particular has a rich history of partnership with China which has transcended from years of socialism to the current era of globalization. Today, China is a major trading and investment partner of Tanzania. Against this background of rich history of partnership between Tanzania and China, this conference aims at exploring at mechanisms through which the two countries can further enhance mutual benefits of the existing cooperation. In particular, the conference aims at addressing the following questions.

    • What does the trade and investment relations with China really mean for both Tanzania and China?
    • To what extend and in what ways is Tanzania benefiting from its investment, trade and other forms of cooperation with China?
    • What lessons on industrialization can Tanzania learn from China?
    • Are Chinese traders and investors unscrupulous businessmen whose operations are to the detriment Tanzania?

Lessons from this conference are meant to be some important inputs for Tanzania’s drive towards industrialization and maximization of benefits from its trade and investment relations with other countries. The Economic and Social Research Foundation would like to request members of the general public who will be interested to attend the event to register by filling the form which is available by following the following link.
